An Indiana University neuroscientist recently discovered something surprising about our monthly hormone cycle: We feel happier and bolder when we look at an attractive man’s face at the end of Week 2 as we get closer to ovulation. The proof: When female volunteers
gazed at photos of good-looking guys during the ovulation phase of their cycle, fMRI scans revealed the reward centers in their brain become more active and the areas that control inhibition become less active—changes that weren’t seen during other phases of the volunteers’ cycles. This is obviously Mother Nature’s attempt at helping fertile women land a suitable mate in time for ovulation by making gals more comfortable at going up to a cutie and introducing herself. After all, most guys never get any more confident approaching a woman than they did in junior high when they’d plaster themselves to the walls like Heimlich maneuver instruction posters during school dances.
