Fatherhood makes men better husbands

by Gabrielle Lichterman

Harvard research shows that testosterone dips as much as 20% once a man marries and has children. “It’s the body’s natural response to settling down since men no longer need that high level of testosterone they used to seek out a mate,” explains Scott Haltzman, M.D., author of The Secrets of Happy Families: Eight Keys to Building a Lifetime of Connection and Contentment. And—surprise—less of this hormone turns your guy into an even better mate than when you first married him. The reason? He becomes mellower, is less likely to engage in risky behavior such as driving fast, he’s a better listener, he’s more playful with the kids and he’s more dedicated to you.
